Patent and Trade Mark firm Dehns are recruiting in multiple offices for multiple positions
Fellows and Associates has recently begun working with our client Dehns on a large-scale recruitment project across several of their offices. The positions are predominantly within the disciplines of engineering and physics and attorneys could be based in Manchester, Oxford, Bristol or Brighton.
Dehns is a top tier ranked, specialist firm of patent and trade mark attorneys. Founded in 1920, Dehns has over 200 people working across 6 offices in the UK and Germany, in addition to a well established, global network of associate firms. Recently Dehns has been experiencing significant growth, winning more business from existing clients and new business from new clients.
Given its uptake in work, Dehns is recruiting attorneys from part qualified all the way up to several years’ post qualified. Pete Fellows, Managing Director of Fellows and Associates has said: “Dehns has a very friendly, inclusive culture with an extremely positive attitude to work/life balance. They also enable their attorneys to really develop their skills with a great deal of opportunities for contentious work including oral proceedings and the chance to work consultatively with clients to provide commercial IP advice.”
In Oxford and Dehns’ new office in Bristol recruits will be working with Partner Adrian Samuels. Adrian has a very diverse client base including ultrasonic interfaces, control systems for domestic appliances, fluid control valves and optics. The Oxford office has a very well-established team, 25 strong, across a range of disciplines. Adrian has been recognised as a ‘Global IP Star’ in the Managing Intellectual Property IP Stars 2018/19 edition. The Bristol office presents an extremely exciting opportunity to be highly involved in its founding and development.
Manchester is a small but growing office with key strategic importance for the firm and its plans for further expansion. The team work entirely within the technical areas of electronics, physics and mechanical engineering. It is a highly supportive group of peers to learn from who are keen to aid new team members in developing their career.
Brighton is Dehns’ second largest office and, with its close proximity to London, will allow you a coastal life style and cost of living whilst still being very connected to the capital.
Dehns has a reputation for outstanding training evidenced by prizes awarded to their attorneys for their achievements in professional examinations. For example, they have a record number of 12 attorneys winning the Gill Prize (awarded for the highest overall aggregate marks achieved in the UK patent final examination papers), including the Gill Prize winner from 2018. In the last decade, 75% of attorneys trained at Dehns qualified at their first attempt, with 90% qualifying at their first or second attempt – this is significantly higher than the national average. In addition, in the 2019 European Qualifying Examinations, 93% of Dehns candidates passed at their first attempt – the UK National average was 76%, while the German national average was 46%.
This year, 2020, Dehns is celebrating its Centenary Year and continues to enjoy top tier status in all major IP and legal directories. Dehns is a highly progressive firm with significant active involvement in initiatives such as IP Inclusive. They have a very happy workforce with excellent levels of staff retention (indeed some attorneys have returned to Dehns after leaving to try a competitor) and a genuine family feel. The firm files over 4600 UK, European and international patent filings each year and carries out a high level of opposition and litigation work. In 2018, and for the fourth consecutive year, Dehns filed more patent applications than any other UK firm and in 2019, Dehns filed 3,930 European Patent applications, more than any other European firm.
All of the roles the firm are recruiting fit within the Engineering Group. This is Dehns’ largest group with 16 Partners, 14 Associates and 37 Technical Assistants with wide ranging expertise including aviation, micro and nano-engineering, civil engineering, marine engineering, medical devices, construction, sanitary products and domestic appliances. The practice acts for many global businesses across a broad variety of complex technologies ensuring that Dehns is a tremendously exciting place to work.
