Patent Attorney (Electronics, Software & Telecommunications), 0-3 Years PQE

Job Region: West Midlands

An international intellectual property practice is seeking a Patent Attorney to join its Birmingham office. The role is suited to candidates 0–3 years post‑qualification with a background in electronics, software, telecommunications or closely related fields.

The team advises on a wide range of technologies, including software, broadcasting, graphical user interfaces, mobile telephony and network communications; internet applications, cloud platforms, digital systems and data‑driven technologies; SEP/FRAND‑related matters and licensing strategy; electronics, semiconductors, sensors, measurement technologies and internet‑access systems; AI‑related inventions, machine learning implementations and embedded software; automotive electronics, vehicle connectivity, control systems and EV‑related electronics; defence and aerospace electronics, including signal processing, communications and control technologies; power electronics, grid‑interface systems and monitoring technologies; and medical‑related electronics, diagnostics, instrumentation and digital health technologies.

Clients include major global technology companies, local businesses and research institutions, providing a balance of direct client engagement and indirect work received through established international attorney networks.

Responsibilities include drafting and prosecuting patent applications in the UK, Europe and internationally; supporting EPO oppositions and other contentious patent work typical for patent attorneys; advising on SEP/FRAND issues and licensing strategy; managing portfolios across telecoms, software, electronics and emerging technologies; and working directly with inventors and in‑house teams, as well as handling work routed through overseas attorneys.

Candidates should have 0–3 years PQE (UK and/or European qualification), a degree in electronics, computer science, physics, telecommunications or similar, experience with software, telecoms, electronics or digital technologies, strong analytical skills and clear communication, and an interest in oppositions, licensing or strategic prosecution work.

Hybrid working applies, with two days per week in the Birmingham office.

The role offers a varied and technically rich workload, exposure to both prosecution and EPO contentious matters, opportunities to develop expertise across a wide range of electronics‑focused technologies, and the chance to work within a technically strong team handling complex UK and European cases.
