Bloomberg reports that Microsoft takes on Novartis in the U.S. Supreme Court when it considers a patent dispute that will determine what types of innovations qualify for legal protection.  With a record setting 68 briefs received from outsiders the decision is likely to affect billions of dollars in patent rights.


 


Some of the U.S. university elite are committing to assist poor countries in gaining better access to drugs produced as a result of discoveries made on their campuses reports Bloomberg.  The likes of Harvard and Yale are even considering reducing their royalty rates as part of their “vigorous efforts” to promote global access to drugs.


 


And finally, American lawyer, composer, inventor and physicist Robert Rines has passed away at the age of 87.  The Telegraph details some of the impact Mr Rines has had on the world such as inventions that led to sharper resolution in radar, sonar and the ultrasound imaging of internal organs but also speaks of his passion for confirming the existence of the Loch Ness Monster.
