Chemistry Boom?

Chemistry Boom?

For 2009 and most of 2010 it was a torrid time for chemistry Patent Attorneys seeking a move.  But all of a sudden, it has started to get considerably better.

Yes chemists are now in hot demand.  We have had several new instructions in the past month in London and other regions of the UK, particularly at the finalist/newly qualified level up to Senior Associate (or equivalent).  The other exciting factor is that the overwhelming majority of these positions are new and not replacing someone who has left (up until recently there was nowhere for them to leave to).

This does have a couple of implications – perhaps it is some indication that there may eventually be life in house? If more work is being given to private practices there will come a point when it is more cost effective to hire. And the increased demand for candidates might start to have an impact on salaries in private practice which have at times been behind other technical disciplines.

It is good cause for optimism more generally as in recent months (previously difficult to find work for) electronics attorneys are in demand again; there are a wealth of biotech positions and even some new trade mark roles.

I do appreciate that recruitment consultants have a vested interest in talking up the market and I certainly do not want to imply that it is easy to find a new position.  However, there are undoubtedly more opportunities available now and that surely can’t be a bad thing?

Finally the sales pitch.  We can help.  If you are chemistry Patent Attorney (or any other technical discipline) who thinks it’s about time you moved roles then get in touch with us.  We’re ethical, honest, realistic and most important of all, ridiculously good looking.

Pete Fellows.
