2009: A Challenging Year For Graduates

2009: A Challenging Year For Graduates

Article by Inside Careers for the Fellows and Associates website.

2009 saw a sharp decrease in the number of graduate vacancies, the total number being 8.9% down from the previous year (AGR Winter Survey 2010). It seems that 2010 is set to be another hard year for students entering the milk round with the predicted decrease being another 1.6%.

A career in Intellectual Property is not the first on every graduate’s list but there are still thousands trying to get into relatively few positions. Inside Careers, the specialist graduate careers publisher, currently have over 10,000 registered users interested in a career as a Patent Attorney. The Inside Careers Guide to Chartered Patent Attorneys remains the only graduate guide to the profession and for many students it serves as their first port of call both on the profession and to research the main companies recruiting. “The best candidates have usually consulted this guide -and it shows”, states Stephen J Mohun, Partner at Haseltine Lake.

Published in partnership with the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys, Inside Careers are already underway in the preparation of the 2010/11 guide due for release in October of this year. “We’ve been working with CIPA and various graduate recruiters, to help get ideas for the new edition and have got new articles coming in already”, editor Emma Braithwaite said. “It’s all about trying to get the best information we can out to students”.

Although recruitment for 2011 seems like a long way off, companies that are recruiting will have to act fast to be included in the guide. “We print a number of guides, and so summer is non-stop for us. It all really kicks off in May and we don’t stop until all the guides can get to our distributors for early September” concluded Emma.
