Secerna
Part Qualified Patent Attorney, York –Electronics/Physics/Engineering
The average price of a house in York is £284,000. In London it’s £673,000. In York you will also be living in an ancient historical city founded by the Romans in the 1st century AD but for less than half the amount.
Coupled with the Roman founding and the less expensive houses is the fact that the standard of living in Yorkshire is very high. Remuneration for many professions is not far behind London (and for Patent Attorneys is at least the same as London) but lots of things cost less, from private schools to a pharmacist’s meal deal. Then if spending your weekends shouting ‘skål’ and drinking impossibly large beverages is your thing, York has a well-established Viking history too.
Plus, you’re not very far from the thriving cities of Leeds and Newcastle. You’ll be close to various motorways and excellent train routes for when you want to pop back to London to shout ‘skål’ at your friends and you will be surrounded by countryside, National Trust listed buildings, airports and a ferry to the Netherlands.
When you arrive in York, put on your Viking helmet and buy a cheaper meal deal, you’ll need somewhere to work and that’s where we at Fellows and Associates come in. We would strongly suggest you hang your helmet at the offices of Secerna.
Secerna is a 15-year-old firm and 20 strong. They’re large enough to offer security and long-term career development but small enough to be agile and are plenty welcoming. They’ll support you through your training, make sure you are given substantial amounts of autonomy and the flexibility to develop your own technical interests. You will likely be working across telecoms, medical devices, automotive and oil and gas with scope to build a practice in other areas such as quantum computing and AI. The firm has a healthy mix of direct client work as well as international agency work and therefore you can be close to some clients, advising on IP strategy, whilst working on multi-million-pound IP portfolios with others.
What about you? You will be a part qualified, finalist or newly qualified patent attorney with a background in physics, electronics, computer science, electrical engineering or a related area we’ve forgotten to add to this list. Unfortunately, Secerna are not in a position to sponsor candidates for this role so you must have the right to work in the UK in a full-time position. In terms of remuneration, Secerna want you to buy that house and have money left for your weekend longship, so they’ll pay what you would expect to earn in London. Of course, if you’re based in Yorkshire or anywhere else and want to move to York they would welcome you too and also pay you what you’d earn in London without having to move to London.
