Perhaps you’ve just passed the EQEs or perhaps that was a year or two ago? You probably feel like you should have more autonomy, or a broader range of clients or more agency over the work you can do. Maybe there are specific technical areas you really want to work within or you just want to have more experience of Oppositions and Appeals. You want to work with more direct clients, you want more exposure to business development. You also want to have a clearer picture on where your career is heading, what opportunities will be available to you. Finally, you want to work with really great attorneys who are nice down to earth people.
If any of the above is true of you, then we should talk. It’s cheap so I’ve heard. If you have recently become qualified, the easiest decision is staying put. But this is not always the right decision. Patent firms really aren’t the same as each other. Whatever is true or not true of your current firm may well be very different elsewhere. Even the day-to-day job can be vastly different depending on the client base and the mindset in relation to what is and is not important to the firm.
