Job Description
Electronics Patent Attorney, Finalist to Several Years’ PQE
Cambridge
In a pandemic, even near its end in the UK (hopefully at least) an entirely reasonable approach to job seeking is to find security. Even better is security coupled with opportunity. As a patent attorney what would be the criteria for that? Well, at the very least, a confidence about the work – what it is, where it came from and the knowledge that it’s not a well that will run dry. But also, on a broader level, you might want to know that where the job is, is not an oasis of success in a desert of failure. Ideally the firm should be succeeding as a whole, not in fits and starts, one Partner here, one Partner there. Group success adds security, if one area falters there is plenty of support to ensure temporary losses are covered.
But what about opportunity? Security in a pandemic is reassuring but it is far from thrilling. It may not be enough to move. There are many ways that opportunity can present itself but in this particular case the firm’s attitude to well-rounded career development is definitely key. Yes, you will have a great portfolio of clients (but every IP job advert says that) it’s the other stuff that can make a difference. Plenty of opportunities to actually meet some of those clients face to face (when that’s in vogue again), perhaps being involved in marketing and branding, developing international campaigns, training people, management and a myriad of other interesting stuff.
And for both security and opportunity, to be sure, you need transparency. An environment that supports your career development by speaking to you, regularly, and perhaps most important of all listening to you. If you know where you stand, you know what’s attainable, in the current climate openness is priceless. However, the firm will pay you really well as well.
